Do you find yourself procrastinating? Do you find yourself saying things like, I’ll do that tomorrow? (But the task doesn’t get done.) Do you plan a workout, but never start?
Procrastination is a common issue that many people face. Do you find yourself saying things like, "I'll workout later, or I'll fold that basket of clothes later?" I've been there, and then after two days of staring at the piles of clothes on the sofa, I begrudgingly go over to fold them up, then I'm ticked that there are so many clothes, and I don't want to fold them (cue the tantrum). On the other hand, people have a fitness plan and do not stick to it because "I don't have time" or "I don't feel like working out." It can be difficult to get started on tasks or workout, especially when we lack the motivation to do them. One effective strategy to overcome this hurdle is to set a timer. By doing so, you can focus your mind for a set amount of time and get started on the task that needs to be done.
Alexa Set A Timer for 5 Minutes
Setting a timer can act as a safeguard to your discipline. It can help you remain focused on the task at hand and avoid distractions. For instance, if you're someone who is task-oriented, you may want to finish a task before moving on to the next one. A timer can help you achieve this goal.
Scenario
If your goal is to work out after work, set a timer for 5 minutes. Get in your workout clothes and shoes, get outside, and start walking. You may set a timer for 5 minutes of your 20-minute walk, then find that after 5 minutes, you say, "I'm already dressed and started," so you finish your 20-minute walk. Mission accomplished.
Use this strategy the next time you don’t want to workout.
To get started with this strategy:
Create a list of three tasks that you've been putting off.
Begin with the easiest one that will take the least amount of time.
Set a timer for 2-5 minutes, and during that time, commit to giving your full attention to progressing or completing the task.
By doing this, you'll be able to make progress on your to-do list, build momentum towards completing all of your tasks, and maybe fold that load of clothes that have been on the sofa for a few days.
Takeaways
Set a timer for 2-5 minutes as a safeguard for your discipline
Dedicate the entire time you set on the timer to that task
You may get more done than you initially thought
